The Staining Process

1) Home Prep

Out of respect for your home, our professionals work with you to determine the best place to set up our staining booth; this can be the garage, back deck or patio, basement, or the actual kitchen.

For your safety and comfort, we properly mask off and ventilate the area. We also mask off all openings, trims, and unstained surfaces. To protect your hard surfaces, we lay protection for floors, countertops, appliances, etc.

2) Cabinet Prep

Cabinet Staining is similar to the painting process but it involves a few extra steps.

If there is an existing stain and the new stain is different, we will sand or chemically remove the old stain. Next, we will sand to a smooth surface, and clean the doors and drawers in preparation for the new stain. Then, we make any necessary repairs as well as any enhancements such as extra drill holes for new handles.

3) Staining

After applying a wood conditioner, we then apply one coat of the stain to let it dry, and then apply a second coat depending on the desired look.

We then seal the stain with a clear polyurethane coat to protect it from chipping.

4) Finish

After the paint on your cabinets has dried, your chosen hardware or upgrades, are installed and doors are re-hung / drawers are reinstalled.

Don't worry! No one leaves without, first, cleaning all affected areas with an anti-bacterial and environmentally friendly cleanser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at ruth@awomansbrush.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

How will you paint my kitchen cabinets if they are stained and clear coated?

After removing the hardware, we clean the surfaces thoroughly with an appropriate environmentally safe cleaner. Greases and oil build-up must be removed before continuing with the next steps. Often furniture polish or some other wax-based material may have been used on these. If waxes exist, we remove them with a stronger cleaner. Once clean, we sand the surface to bare wood then apply a wood primer for best adhesion. The primer will also help prevent any bleeding issues. For more information see above.

What type of paint do you use?

For most of our home painting services, we use Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel

Can you give me color advice? What colors are best?

Color and moods. There has been much written on the effects of color on the moods of individuals. Here are some general concepts: Warm Colors (Red, Yellow, and Orange) attract attention, create excitement, promote cheerfulness, and stimulate action. Cool Colors (Blue, Turquoise, Green, and Purple) relax and refresh, promote peacefulness, encourage and concentration. Light Colors (Off Whites, Light tones) make areas seem more spacious and tend to give people a psychological lift. Dark Colors (Deep tones) Make areas appear smaller and long exposure can create a feeling of monotony and depression. Bold Colors: Attracts the eye and creates excitement. Whites: Reflect more light and denote cleanliness. They can unite spaces. For hands-on help, book some time with our color consultants..

Where will you paint the cabinets in my home or at your factory?

All of the painting will be done at your home. Generally, a garage, basement, outside deck/patio will work and even the kitchen if there is enough space for us to set up. If none of those are available then we will transport the doors and drawers to our location.

Are there strong chemicals that will require me to be out the house?

The only chemical that may irritate is the primer. It is a shellac base so sometimes the smell is strong but it quickly evaporates as it’s drying. Most times customers will run an errand while this is happening.

Do I need to empty the shelves and drawers?

Yes and no. If we are not painting your shelves, you need not empty them. For the drawers, if the faceplate is removable, you need not empty the drawers. If the faceplate is not removable, you need to remove the contents.

How far out are you booking projects?

Our average lead time is 4 weeks out, but sometimes we have unexpected slots open that enable us to start you sooner.

Are you licensed?

Yes, we are licensed in the state of Maryland and New Jersey. You can search us by our corporate name, The Traore Group, Inc. dba A Woman’s Brush. We are also fully insured and will provide documentation attached to your contract for your convenience.

Can I trust the painters that are in my home?

Yes. We only hire vetted and bonded painter professionals. Our painters have an average of 10 years of professional experience and are highly rated as dependable, trustworthy, and quality workers. We will not put anyone in your home that we would not have inside of our own.

What is your warranty?

We provide a 30-day guarantee on labor and a 90-day guarantee on the paint. More detail is provided in the contract under warranty.

How long is the process from start to finish?

Generally, for a 10x10 kitchen for both uppers and lower cabinets, expect anywhere from 2- 3 days. 3-5 days for larger sizes.
